Thomas er på plass som dommer i Cup of Excellence konkurransen i Guatemala. Les om hans opplevelser her.
Monday 25th May
I have visited most of the coffee producing countries of central American but this is my 1st time in beautiful Guatemala. The country that has produced great coffees such as La Merced, Las Nubes, Buenos Aires & Chibulbut, all coffees that you have or can find in Kaffebrenneriet even today.
Today was the tipical Monday start for Cup of Excellence, a day of welcome speaches from our host and calibration cupping rounds for this years internation jury. The jury is made up of a mixed group of 22 people representing N. America, Europe & Asia. The real reason we are all here starts tomorrow, when we begin cupping the 41 out of 172 coffees that were submitted to this years CoE. The national jury did their job in the last 2 week cupping all 172 coffees, they narrowed it down to the top 41 of the best of the best from this years harvest.
First impression of Guatemala after day one is summed up in this quote from Felix Reynoso, mill manager - Buenos Aires “the person who scores the goal does so because his teammates pass him the ball.”
This is truely one of the most professional and structured coffee producing countries I have visited in my 16 years of working with coffee. It’s going to be a GREAT COFFEE week here in Guatemala,
Thomas

Tuesday 26th May
First official day of cupping began with three sessions of cupping totaling 20 coffees. My impression after this day is that this year’s harvest has produced some fantastic coffees. I found it easy to describe the coffees as clean - pure - transparent, sugar like molasses and honey, fruits like melon and berries, an acidity that was bright, clean and sweet.
At the end day the International jury qualified 11 of the 20 coffees as CoE quality with a score of 84 points or better. This sends these coffees further to a final cupping that will take place on Thursday for one more testing by the International jury to determine if they are CoE winners for 2010.
The end of the day included a farm tour to Santa Isabel, a 700 hectares 100 % organic coffee plantation. A family operation since 1899 now run by 4th generation Martin & Alex Keller. An amazing operation that included a staff of 1000, a school for 300 kids, medical center, roasting and packaging plant and much more. These guys may have been big but quality is still their nr 1 goal. They have been active and won in CoE before and I understand they are in the compition this year as well.

Wednesday 27th May
Wednesday CoE cupping was another great day filled with many great coffees. The 1st table of 7 coffees set the standard for the rest of the day, they were all beautiful coffees, clean/pure cups, sweet, full-bodied, with hints of berries, melons, citrus, and long lingering after taste. We passed them all to the final round.
The next two rounds went well but 3 coffees were found with defects and eliminated. Now after 2 days of cupping we passed 29 coffees total with a score of 84 pts or better to the final round on Thursday.
Thursday is going to be an intense day of cupping to determine who wins this years CoE. Looking forward to it,
Thomas
Thursday 28th May
Today’s four rounds of superb coffee could not have end on a more positive note than having all but one of the 29 coffees qualify as CoE Guatemala winners for 2010. So it’s official after 3 weeks of cupping 172 coffees we have 28 winners.
Tomorrow morning we’ll cup the top 10 one more time and arrange from 1st to 10th place.

Verdens mest anerkjente kvalitetsprogram for kaffe!
Velkommen!
